A&E

Ended up at the emergency ward of the children's hospital this evening, after Ili came running into the kitchen saying she'd swallowed a marble. No chocking—thankfully—but she could feel it wedged in her throat, so we whizzed out on our bikes (hospital only 10 minutes away) to have her checked out. Luckily, all was fine, and hospital brilliant. Hopefully a lesson learned.

Saturday night at the A&E!

Swim party at Allenmoos

Carolina's little brother and sister invited both Bea and Ili to their joint birthday party at Bad Allenmoos. It was scorching hot and we all hung out in the grill area so we could barbecue. Kids spent lots of time in the water so Bea got to swim with some of his class mates. Papa joined us after work for an evening swim too.

House bound

Bea was due to go to Viktor's for lunch, but came home and plopped straight into bed feeling unwell. So, all activities cancelled, and we stayed in — shame, as it was a gorgeous day. Lots of time spent on the application for an apartment this week (deadline tomorrow). Fingers crossed we're lucky.

Happy Birthday Papa

Papa's birthday today (although sadly he attended a neighbour's funeral, so celebrations on hold). No school on Wednesday afternoon so the Hof was bursting with children's activities. Almost all the kids seemed to be there today in their swimming gear playing in the water fountain or sand, and running backwards and forwards to collect picnic items, blankets, umbrellas for a huge camp they were making. Bea had a fab time!

Ben Howard

We caught up with an old friend visiting Zürich today (Gair and I used to see a lot of each other as Ili and her daughter Tilly were born here a month apart). Interesting to see how the girls have both grown. A big night out for mama and papa tonight, the very lovely Ben Howard at the Kaufleuten.

Reading and running

Bea's reading seemed to take a bit of a leap forward today—which is great news—and he seemed to actually enjoy it (he's previously been surprisingly reluctant). In between showers we took the bike and scooter out and ran around in the park. Was nice with just the two of them (no friends joined today and Antonia postponed until tomorrow).

Even more swimming!

We had planned an early morning swim in the lake, but although it's like mid-summer, the lake is still just under 20 degrees (too cool for the kids) so back again for the third time this week to Bad Allenmoos for a dip. Zinnia came along with us today and Bea was very proud showing off his solo sliding.

Saturday 23 June 2012

Saturday on roof

Kids started off the day at the school's flea market — Bea spent some well earned pocket money on a pirate ship. Lazed on the roof for most of the day (finished yet another Roald Dahl book) and the kids also cooled off in the water. Bea showed us his dance that they are preparing for the children leaving Kindergarten, which is based on a Hawaiian dance and exceptionally cute. The leaving party will be on the 11 July, so can't wait to see him perform it!

Bridge jumping

Met up with friends Ryan and Hil and their two, Sophie and Charlie, for an evening down at the river swimming area (Obererletten). The highlight was definitely both papas jumping off the bridge which the kids thought very funny indeed! Kids played well together, giving us some good quality beer drinking time. Germany was playing in Euro 2012, so crowd was in full voice and the kids spent some time running around with the ball too. Nice to get out for an evening in town.

Swimming day

We needed to be by the water this afternoon, as it was simply too hot hot hot to be anywhere else!! So we skipped Bea's afternoon music group and headed straight to Allenmoos after lunch. Bumped into friends there so Bea had Sophi to zoom down the water slide with, and considering in the afternoon they had bigger kids to contend with and their crazy slide antics, Bea and Sophi did amazingly well. Papa joined us and we all stayed late, had dinner there, and arrived home in time for bed and an almighty thunderstorm.

Wednesday 20 June 2012

Lazy day

Still hot here, so after picking Bea up from school, we hid from the heat most of the day. In the late afternoon Bea joined the kids out in the Hof doing timed bike laps, was funny hearing them chanting "Beathan, Beathan, Beathan . . . " He said he was the fastest!

Trip to Allenmoos

Headed to Allenmoos today for a cool-off in the water. The biggest highlight was Bea's solo venture down the 72 meter flume. It was so great to see!

Monday 18 June 2012

School trip

Bea set off on his first school trip today (postponed from last week). So he had an early start with rucksack on his back to Rumensee a little lake not far from Zurich. From what we heard all went well although it was very hot and all the kids returned back to Kindergarten very hot and exhausted.

Saturday 16 June 2012

Running up that hill

Hot day (perhaps a bit too hot for the hills), and we headed to the mountains on the hunt for some Swiss flowers in bloom (which we found aplenty). The cable car ride as always was good fun as we were silently swept up the mountainside. This was a walk we had done before (Hoch-yBrig), and we were trying to retrace our steps to find the second cable car to take us up from 1400 m to 1700 m and so place us on a ridge walk where we'd be treated to wonderful mountain vistas. In theory. But we were two weeks early! No higher cable cars running—which on the plus side meant no crowds of ramblers—but it also meant with two little ones we wouldn't make it up to the top. So we headed for shade (24 degrees at least) and had a picnic (although I did try to hitch a ride for us all with a local 'farmer'). The children did amazing with no complaints from either, and walked with us to marvel at the flowers and take in the mountain air. We walked upwards until we were too hot to head any further. After an ice cream refresher and a trampoline session for the kids (Swiss mountain restaurants are something else!) we headed back down through the forests (missed the last returning lower cable car) to fall into a restaurant to an expensive pizza dinner. Children exhausted (Bea in particular), and muscles stiff, but a great adventure.

Bea and Grandma going up!

Along the lakeside

Started the morning at the market for scrumptious pastries and coffee, and spent the day alongside the lake . . .  fish spotting, feather collecting, swan feeding, ice cream eating, bike riding, coffee drinking, sun soaking and shade seeking. Settled in a cafe by the lake while the children played around (near the Henry Moore's "Sheep Piece" sculpture) and papa skipped the office for the afternoon and joined us for a lunch. Got a bit on the hot side for the little ones and they just about held out. Took the boat back across the lake to Bürkliplatz. The second Hof grill tonight, and all ended up on the roof watching the sun going down. A lovely day.

Grandma arrives

Managed to catch up with Marianna this morning, and Ili and Miya run around in the park together. Girls getting on nicely, so all good there. Weather warming up. Bea, Ili and papa all headed out to meet Gay at the airport this evening. After much excitement and a late night for the kiddies, Bea finally went to bed with his new welly boots that grandma bought him. Ili slept the night in her wellies too. (Mama spent a boozy evening out with Sarah).

Miya and Ili.

Wednesday 13 June 2012

When it rains it pours

The kids managed to get out for a bit today in between downpours and sheltered in the tree house in the Hof. Looked very cosy.

Tuesday 12 June 2012

Wet wet wet

Rained all day. Walked with Bea under dripping umbrellas to Kindergarten to speak with his teacher this morning as there has been a few more scuffles on the walk home (not with Bea, but with his friends this time). She had heard of other incidents and was sad as it's been such a good group this year and was going to talk to the children today. Ili and I got drenched on our bike going to music and singing, and drenched on the way back. We met Bea walking home from Kindergarten with his umbrella all torn but he was having fun with it folded tightly over his head like a tall pixie hat so as not to get wet. Viktor came over to play with Bea this afternoon, but far too much indoor play, we need to get out!

Ili standing on a 'puddle' as part of the 'Regnet Mütze" (rain cap) song.

Monday 11 June 2012

Bea off Kindergarten

Bea was feeling 'krank' so he stayed at home today. Raining . . .  Where's summer gone?

Sunday 10 June 2012

Yet another birthday party

Papa took Bea to his turnhalle (sports hall) for Majalis' 5th birthday party, where the big trampoline was brought out, hoops let down from the ceiling, and crash mats plopped on the floor. No pics of Bea, but here's Ili swinging on the hoops. The kids had an active session before heading back to the Hof — didn't see Bea until close to bedtime.

Saturday 9 June 2012

Chilling on the roof

All quiet in the house today (neighbours in Germany) so we had the roof terrace to ourselves. Here's Bea and Ili in our homemade hammock.

Friday 8 June 2012

Friday painting

Met up with Sarah (Irish buddy) and we all went to the Friday afternoon painting session at Shigu. Bea wanted to paint another dinosaur. Ili and Olivia played in the park together afterward and cutely pushed each other on the swings. Bea was a sweetie and helped them both in and out in between riding around on his bike — giving lots of time for Sarah and I to exchange camping stories.

Thursday 7 June 2012

Riding in the rain

Bea and Ili (with a little help from mama) have successfully raised frogs! Great excitement when a froglet was found jumping around in the loo at lunchtime (the aquarium is kept there). Still tiny and with tail, but now with four legs and able to breath oxygen and eat meat (the next challenge). Then after reading books on the roof and Bea's music and dance session, we all cycled to the allotment for a sausage grill. Today was pretty hot and we had the first flourish of raspberries arrive this week (I've been secretly snacking), and Bea and Ili had their first taste this evening. After the heat, however, came the storm and we got packing just as the thunder started. Half way home it completely lashed it down! Can't pretend we didn't enjoy cycling through it though, we all had a giggle as we arrived back like soggy rats.

Sopping wet! (camera wet too).

Another school holiday

Another holiday from school (teacher's development day) and although I was planning to take Bea and Ili on one of the ferry boats on the lake to the beautiful Ufenau Island, the weather simply wasn't up to it. No point in freezing their butts off on deck. Bea was invited to a friend's house for lunch which turned into a full day and he was very excited running around in the Hof with some of the bigger boys and we didn't see him until super time (when his friend James came with him). He was then invited for a second super (fondue) and was so wired he could sleep. No pics, but here's a silly one from late last night making elderflower cordial.

Tuesday 5 June 2012

Walk in the woods

Music for Ili went well, and she certainly gets into the swing of things and enjoys. This afternoon was a great day for the woods and we invited Bea's friend Viktor to join us (which meant his Bulgarian grandmother came along too as his mother is still with newborn—I now know how totally frustrating it is when you don't share a single word of a common language). We walked to the frog pond and back and picked elderflowers on the way home. As there is no school tomorrow (another holiday) Bea and I made elderflower champagne and elderflower cordial later this evening.

Ili and others with their little watering cans.
Ili spotted a smart little frog.

Monday 4 June 2012

Little frogs

Bea back to Kindergarten this morning and Ili to Spielgruppe—all well there. Bea announced his first school trip which is next Monday. They'll take a boat on the lake, then walk through the woods to visit a waterfall. He is to take his swimming gear and something to BBQ, so it all sounds like great fun! Antonia was over this afternoon, and they all made a new home for the tadpoles which now have tiny legs developing. Ili made the frogs a little diving board! It will be time to start taking them back to the woods shortly (we've had them nine weeks now).

Sunday 3 June 2012

Dodging the rain

Bea was with James most of the day, and Chris took them out on their bikes in between rain showers. Think after Italy I'm all photographed out — I'll get snapping again.

Saturday 2 June 2012

More parties (for big and small)

Bea was out to a birthday party all day (another one!) for Miya the youngest one in his Kindergarten who he is fond of. There were around eight girls . . .  and Beathan! I think he had fun. It was a balmy warm evening, and kids were tucked up in bed exhausted while Chris and I sneaked out to a roof terrace leaving party at a neighbouring apartment. Sublime views across the lake with the city lights (and a popular full-on whisky pud made by Chris— thanks Scotland!).

Zurich at night.

Friday 1 June 2012

Sun flowers and late nights

Ili and I went to the market for some more seedlings this morning — the slugs have been busy on the allotment, sob sob. The evening we went out for 'after work' beers at the Alten Löwen (old lion) around the corner with a new colleague of Chris' (Claude, a nice chilled Spanish guy with two kids), plus a few others, and we sunk a few beers too many. It was the local Open Air Zürich festival this weekend just around the corner, and in a happy state we decided it would be fun to wobble round with the children — people do, it's in our local park and has a bit of a family reputation. But it was way too noisy (I presume we missed the quieter bands), so headed back to the roof. Late night for the kids—too drunk for pics, sorry!

Ili, fresh as a daisy at the Bürkliplatz market.
